Babar Azam, Pakistan’s star batter, became the first Pakistani captain to lead his team to a World Cup victory over archrival India. Babar’s outstanding captaincy and batting propelled Pakistan to a convincing ten-wicket victory over India, their largest in terms of wickets remaining in T20I cricket.
Azeem Siddique, the Pakistani captain’s father, was also in the stadium to witness the victory and burst into tears when his son hit the winning runs against their archrivals. Various social media platforms shared a video of Babar’s father during the winning moments.
Mazher Arshad, a well-known cricket statistician, shared the video on Twitter and explained a conversation he had with Babar’s father a few years before Babar made his debut for Pakistan. “I clearly remember what his father told me ‘bas debut ho jane do,” Mazher tweeted. ‘Agay sara maidaan babar ka hai’ (just let him make his debut, and the entire world will be in Babar’s hands)”.
Pakistan’s convincing victory over their arch-rivals has put them in pole position to reach the T20 World Cup semi-finals in 2021. The Men in Green will be looking to replicate their performance against the Kiwis on Tuesday before facing Afghanistan a few days later.
