Eddie Howe believes it would be “foolish” to promise that bottom club Newcastle will buy their way out of Premier League relegation trouble during the January transfer window.

On Monday, the new manager celebrated his 44th birthday by preparing his team for Tuesday’s match against Norwich, with the club still looking for their first win of the season after 13 games.

Newcastle, who were defeated 2-0 at Arsenal on Saturday, are six points adrift of safety at the bottom of the table, but they have crucial home games against Norwich and Burnley, the two clubs directly above them, coming up in the coming week.

The Magpies’ new Saudi-backed owners have indicated that they will invest heavily in the squad, but Howe understands that spending power alone will not be enough to keep them in the Premier League.

When asked if he had been assured of financial support during the transfer window, he said, “I can’t make any promises on that, but I can promise that the people above me, the owners, will support the team and support me in trying to achieve what we need.” That’s all I have to say at the moment.

“It would be irresponsible of me to make hasty promises or statements.” My current priority is to get the most out of the players we have.”

Howe has seen signs of improvement in his team in the two games since replacing Steve Bruce, but he knows defensive flaws must be addressed if they are to climb out of trouble.

“I don’t think there are any limits to what we can accomplish with the players we have here,” he said. “We need to improve our performances and our results, and I believe you will see a different team once confidence returns to the team.”
“However, for any team, attacking and defending is always a delicate balance, and we just need to get that right.”

Howe, who will be without suspended defenders Jamaal Lascelles, his captain, and Matt Ritchie, will be in charge for the first time at St James’ Park after missing the previous home game due to a positive coronavirus test.
