When India lost the third Test match in South Africa on Friday, skipper Virat Kohli missed out on becoming the first Indian captain to win a Test series there.

On the fourth day of the last Test against India at Newlands in Cape Town, Keegan Petersen scored 82 to give South Africa a series win.

South Africa, placed sixth in the International Cricket Council Test rankings, won the three-match series 2-1 after defeating top-ranked India by seven wickets.

The chase was tense, with South Africa having to work hard for practically every run after being set 212 on a track that aided the quick bowlers.

In the eighth over of the day, Petersen, who was on 59, survived a simple chance to Cheteshwar Pujara at first slip off Jasprit Bumrah.

After resuming at 101 for two, Petersen added 23 more vital runs as he and Rassie van der Dussen (41 not out) put on 54 runs.

With an undefeated 57-run stand, Van van Dussen and Temba Bavuma (32 not out) led South Africa to victory 35 minutes after lunch.

After India surged to victory in the first Test, South Africa looked doomed, but the hosts leveled the series in Johannesburg and went on to win a remarkable series.
