In their first competition in eight years, the Pakistani women’s football team won for the first time when they defeated the Maldives 7-0 in their last group match of the 2022 SAFF Women’s Championships.

The Women in Green were unstoppable the entire game because they attacked the opposition straight away. They outperformed the Maldives and looked like a much stronger team than they did in their previous match against Bangladesh. They also played some fantastic football.

Rameen Fareed’s spectacular effort from outside the box in the 38th minute gave Pakistan the lead in the first half. Throughout the first half, Pakistan continued to assault but was unable to add another goal.

After Khadija Kazmi converted a penalty kick in the second half, the Green Shirts increased their advantage to two goals, making it 3-0.

Pakistan now had a 4-0 lead as Nadia Khan doubled her score after rounding off the goalkeeper. Nadia finished it in the bottom-left corner after dribbling past the Maldives defence to complete her hat-trick. In the dying seconds of the game, Nadia scored her fourth goal, once more gliding past the hapless keeper. In extra time, substitute Anmol added a seventh goal.

The opponent goalie barged at forwarding Zulfia Nazir, perhaps inflicting a career-ending injury, which soured the mood despite the Women in Green’s brilliant play. Although the goalkeeper had already received a yellow card for the appalling challenge, the referee chose not to dismiss her. Pakistan, though, was excellent and had signs of becoming a strong team.
