Shami, India’s only Muslim player, received thousands of threatening and derogatory comments and messages on his social media accounts following India’s loss to Pakistan in the 2021 T20 World Cup match. Many people accused him of being a traitor and of fixing the match.
Mohammad Rizwan came out in support of Shami, urging fans to respect the fast bowler’s contributions to his country. Rizwan expressed his support on Twitter.
“The kind of pressure, struggles, and sacrifices a player has to go through for his country and his people are immeasurable,” Rizwan tweeted. Mohammed Shami is a rising star and one of the world’s best bowlers. Please be respectful of your stars. This game should unite people rather than divide them.”
Many people on both sides of the border praised Rizwan’s tweet. Rashid Latif and Salman Butt, both former Pakistani cricketers, also expressed their support for Rizwan’s tweet.
Earlier, many Indian cricketers and journalists urged fans to stop the abuse and not single out Shami, who has recently been one of the team’s best performers. However, they did not specify why only Shami was targeted, despite the fact that the majority of their other players did not perform well.
