History
The Royal Challengers Bangalore have been runners-up three times, despite their high popularity and lack of trophies to show for it. They were the second-most expensive franchise in 2008, having been purchased for Rs 464 crore (about US$111.6 million). In 2015, the squad was sold by Vijay Mallya, chairman of United Breweries Limited, to Diageo India.
The team was dubbed a Test XI in 2008, as they spent heavily on experienced players in the hopes of quickly adapting to T20, but they only secured four victories. RCB, on the other hand, turned things around in the following three seasons, finishing second twice.
The franchise has spent a lot of money on several players at the auction throughout the years, including Yuvraj Singh (2014), Dinesh Karthik (2015), and Chris Morris (2020), but has seldom backed these major buys for a second season if they didn’t impress the first time. Despite their ups and downs, the franchise has stuck with Virat Kohli as captain since 2013. Glenn Maxwell was signed for close to $2 million in 2021.
Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble’s highs aided RCB’s recovery from near rock bottom in 2008 to runners-up in 2009. In 2011, Chris Gayle staged a miraculous run that nearly single-handedly propelled them to the championship game. Similarly, Kohli turned a mid-table finish in 2016 into a thrilling late dash to the final by amassing a record-breaking number of runs.
The lowest points
In 2008, when RCB’s lineup, which was heavy on Test veterans, faced a 223-run deficit in their first IPL game, they turned to Dravid and Wasim Jaffer, two doyens of red-ball cricket, to open the innings. After a run of failures, its CEO, Charu Sharma, was fired midway through the season, and director Martin Crowe quit.
ahead of 2009, the franchise established a new set-up. Every season since 2016, they’ve had a new coach.
Season by season from 2008 until the present
The team lacked depth, and Dravid, the captain, appeared to be under constant strain. They possessed a good board in terms of tactics, but they lacked the men to challenge large targets or build up scores. They finished in seventh place with only four wins in 14 games.
Runners-up in 2009
Kevin Pietersen, the new captain, did little to improve the perception of RCB as a poor starter. RCB had lost four of their previous six games before Kumble took over as captain, but he spurred a fantastic turnaround, and the club made it to the final. Manish Pandey became a star after becoming the first Indian to score a century in the IPL.
2010 was the third year.
RCB advanced to the semi-finals but fell short against the Mumbai Indians in a high-scoring chase, albeit they went on to thrash the Deccan Chargers in a third-place playoff, the team they lost to in 2009 final. This season, Robin Uthappa broke through with a string of steady scores, however, it turned out to be his final season with the franchise.
Runners-up in 2011
Daniel Vettori took over as captain, but RCB struggled to get off to a good start this time, with the batting failing to click. Then, as a replacement for Dirk Nannes, Gayle came into the side and smashed a century against the Kolkata Knight Riders, the team that had released him. He was the leading run-scorer that season, leading RCB to the final when they were thrashed by the Chennai Super Kings.
2012 is the fifth year.
RCB needed a win over the Deccan Chargers in their final league game to make the playoffs, but they disintegrated in a low-scoring chase, torn apart by former RCB player Dale Steyn, who went 3 for 8.
This season, Gayle broke the 700-run barrier and remained the team’s highest performer. The year 2013 was the fifth.
Gayle has already scored over 700 runs in his career, including 175 not out against the Pune Warriors, which is the greatest individual score in T20 cricket. The season also saw a change in leadership, with Kohli taking over from Vettori in the middle of the season, although the Royal Challengers were unable to win the title.
The year 2014 is the seventh.
Ray Jennings stepped down as head coach, and Vettori was named in his place. RCB spent a lot of money on Yuvraj Singh at the auction, but he didn’t produce. Kohli had a mediocre season, Gayle had a terrible one, and RCB struggled, winning only five games. Mitchell Starc’s entrance, on the other hand, was a silver lining, and Yuzvendra Chahal became a breakout sensation.
2015 is the third year.
This season’s big-name was Dinesh Karthik, however, he only managed 141 runs in 11 innings and was quickly released. Chahal, Starc, Harshal Patel, and S Aravind also had strong bowling efforts. The batting continued to revolve on Gayle, Kohli, and de Villiers, and they were unable to win the qualifier against CSK on a square turner. Kohli, the runners-up in 2016, scored just under 1000 runs in the season and single-handedly turned the team’s fortunes around. After losing five of their first seven games, they made it all the way to the final, when they were defeated by SRH in a thrilling chase: Gayle and Kohli built a solid foundation, but the middle order crumbled under duress.
The year 2017 is the eighth.
This dreadful year was typified by poor batting performances. Kohli, Gayle, and de Villiers were all out due to injuries, and the latter two only managed 416 runs at an average of under 25. The intermediate order was simply under too much stress, and they gave up. The final tally was three wins in 14 games, with the lowest score being a 49-all against the Kolkata Knight Riders.
The year 2018 is the sixth.
Due to the absence of Gayle, Kohli and de Villiers were tasked with scoring 530 and 480 runs, respectively. Mandeep Singh, with 252 runs, was the next greatest middle-order batsman. RCB’s struggle to find an optimal XI early on lost them the game. In their final game against the Rajasthan Royals, they had a slim opportunity of qualifying, but they crumbled2019 – In ninth Kohli took on the majority of the batting load once more, with little help from the other batsmen.
Death bowling was still an issue, the spinners struggled, and they were overworked in the second half of the competition. Kohli was open about his displeasure and impotence, which resulted in the coaching staff being completely overhauled ahead of the 2020 season.
2020 is the fourth year
With seven victories in ten games, they were on track for a top-two finish and two chances at the championship, but they dropped their next four games and had to scramble into the playoffs on net run rate. They ran into their bogey team, the Sunrisers Hyderabad, in the eliminator and lost. They finished the tournament with a five-game losing streak.
Players who are important
Kohli, Virat
When Delhi passed up the chance to sign the 2008 Under-19 World Cup-winning captain, RCB leaped at the chance. Kohli is still the only player in the league who has only played for one franchise after 12 years. In 2016, he set a record by scoring 973 runs, including four hundred, to lead RCB to the final.
De Villiers, AB
He joined the franchise in 2011 and quickly rose through the ranks of the management team. He wore the gloves until 2013 when back issues forced him to retire. Along with Kohli, Has has often had to manage an inexperienced middle order. When Aaron Finch was added to the mix, de Villiers was given the opportunity to play finisher.
Chris Gayle is a professional basketball player.
Gayle’s journey in the world of T20 competitions began when he joined RCB as a substitute player in the 2011 IPL. He was the leading run-scorer that year and the following year (when he was also named MVP). His play was hampered by back ailments toward the end of his contract, and he was released at the end of the 2017 season.
Padikkal, Devdutt
In 2019, he warmed the bench, but Parthiv Patel was preferred over him. But it was his performances in domestic cricket that broke the door down, and he didn’t allow the pandemic-induced gap disrupt his rhythm. His 473 runs were the most by an uncapped Indian player in his debut season and the most by a Royal Challengers batsman in IPL 2020.
Chahal, Yuzvendra
Chahal has signed for Rs 10 lakh (about $16,000) in 2014 after spending three years on the periphery with the Mumbai Indians. Since then, he has become RCB’s leading wicket-taker. At the Chinnaswamy, he may bowl with the new ball or provide control on turners in the middle overs. Chahal was the tournament’s second-highest wicket-taker in 2016.
