Salman Butt, a former Pakistan captain, has been named head coach of the Singapore cricket team for the 2022 season. He will work alongside Jamal Hussain, who is the fielding coach for the Pakistan women’s squad.
Under Salman Butt, Singapore will compete in the ICC T20 World Cup qualifications, Asia Cup qualifiers, and ICC Men’s Challenge League A for a chance to advance to the ICC’s ODI World Cup qualification stage in the following five months.
Butt announced his retirement from all kinds of cricket in 2022, and this is his first significant coaching role. After the board informed him that he was not being considered for selection, he began commentating in domestic competitions.
SCA’s chief executive officer, Saad Janjua, told the media after the formal announcement that the newly appointed coach will be based in Singapore and will travel with the club as head coach on a consultant contract.
In the Lord’s Test in 2010, Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif, and Mohammad Amir were found guilty of spot-fixing and were banned from international cricket.
He returned to domestic cricket in 2016, and subsequently played in the Pakistan Super League 2019 for the Lahore Qalandars, but failed to impress the selectors.
Butt was a frequent opener for Pakistan, appearing in 33 Tests and 78 One-Day Internationals. In Test cricket, he has 1,889 runs while in ODI cricket, he has 2,725 runs.
